Old South Meeting House

The Old South Meeting House stands as a symbol of Boston's rich history and played a significant role in shaping America's future. The Old South Meeting House has been an important landmark since its construction in 1729 and continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Location

Located at 310 Washington Street, Boston, the Old South Meeting House stands as a reminder of the city's rich history. This iconic structure has served as a gathering place for both religious and secular events throughout the centuries.

History of the Old South Meeting House

The original building was erected as a Puritan meetinghouse in 1670. However, after a fire destroyed the structure in 1872, it was rebuilt on a grander scale in 1729. The new building, designed by architect Robert Twelves, featured a steeple that towered over the city at an impressive 183 feet.

What to See at the Old South Meeting House

Visitors can explore the interior of the Old South Meeting House and take a step back in time. The Great Hall, which spans 5,000 square feet, once hosted some of the most significant events leading up to the American Revolution. It was here that colonists gathered to protest against British taxation policies and planned the iconic Boston Tea Party.

Additionally, the building's architecture is a sight to behold. The grand steeple and beautiful brick facade are characteristic of New England colonial architecture and provide a picturesque backdrop for photos.

Nearby Attractions

The Old South Meeting House is well-situated in downtown Boston, making it easy for tourists to visit other nearby attractions. Just a short walk away is the Boston Common, a spacious park that offers respite from the bustling city. The Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking tour that highlights historic sites related to the American Revolution, also passes by the Old South Meeting House.
