King's Chapel Burying Ground
Located in the heart of downtown Boston, King's Chapel Burying Ground is a historical landmark that holds immense cultural and architectural significance. As one of the oldest cemeteries in the city, it serves as a resting place for some of Boston's most prominent figures from the 17th and 18th centuries..
Location
King's Chapel Burying Ground is situated on Tremont Street in downtown Boston, across from King's Chapel. It is easily accessible by public transportation and within walking distance from popular tourist attractions such as the Boston Common and Faneuil Hall.
History
Originally known as the "King's Chapel Yard" or "Brattle Street Burying Ground," this historic site was the first cemetery in Boston to be owned by a church. It was created for members of King's Chapel, one of the oldest churches in Boston, which was founded in 1686.
Over the years, it became a popular burial ground for Boston's elite, including prominent figures such as John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Mary Chilton, the first woman to step off the Mayflower.
What to See
Stepping into King's Chapel Burying Ground is like taking a walk-through history. The cemetery is filled with ornate gravestones and tombs, many of which date back to the 17th century. Visitors can also see the iconic "Anatomy Lesson" statue, which depicts a skeleton holding a quill pen and an hourglass.
One of the most interesting features of this cemetery is the mix of architectural styles. The oldest gravestones are simple and plain, while newer ones showcase elaborate carvings and designs.
