The Institute of Contemporary Art
Nestled on a scenic waterfront overlooking Boston Harbor, the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston is a haven for art lovers and casual visitors alike. This gem of a museum boasts a stunning collection of contemporary art from around the world, as well as thought-provoking exhibitions and engaging educational programs.
History
The ICA was founded in 1936 as a sister institution to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. Originally located in the Back Bay area of Boston, it wasn't until 2006 that the museum moved to its current location on Fan Pier in South Boston. Designed by renowned architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the ICA's iconic building has become an attraction in its own right.
What to Do
A visit to the ICA offers a multifaceted experience. Start by exploring the museum's permanent collection, which includes works by established and emerging artists from around the world. Then, make your way through the rotating exhibitions that showcase cutting-edge contemporary art in various mediums. The ICA also hosts lectures, talks, and performances that provide a deeper understanding of the works on display.
Nearby Attractions
Aside from the stunning views of Boston Harbor, there are plenty of nearby attractions to explore after you visit the ICA. Take a stroll along the scenic Harborwalk or head over to the Seaport District for some shopping and dining. You can also plan a tour of Boston with the popular Boston Sightseeing double-decker bus, which conveniently stops near the ICA.
