Where is Back Bay Station in Boston?

Back Bay Station is at 145 Dartmouth Street in the Back Bay neighborhood, filling the city block between Dartmouth and Clarendon Streets, with a direct underpass connection to Copley Place.

Is Back Bay Station the same as South Station?

No. They are two separate Boston transit hubs. Back Bay Station is in the Back Bay neighborhood and serves Amtrak, Commuter Rail, and the Orange Line, while South Station is downtown near the Financial District and serves additional Amtrak routes, Commuter Rail lines, and the Red Line.

Is Back Bay walkable from the station?

Yes. Back Bay Station sits inside the Back Bay neighborhood itself, so landmarks like Copley Square, Trinity Church, and Newbury Street's shopping district are all within easy walking distance.

Is there parking at Back Bay Station?

Parking options exist near the station, though availability and pricing change. Checking current MBTA or Amtrak parking information before your visit is recommended, since this page does not track live parking data.

Back Bay Boston

Back Bay is one of Boston's most photographed neighborhoods, known for its rows of 19th-century Victorian brownstones, tree-lined streets, and a location that puts the Charles River, Newbury Street, and the Freedom Trail all within easy reach. Visitors come here to walk its historic blocks, browse its shops, and see landmarks like Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library up close. This guide covers where Back Bay sits in the city, how it became one of Boston's grandest neighborhoods, and what makes it worth building into a Boston sightseeing day.

Where Is Back Bay?

Back Bay sits between the Charles River to the north, the Massachusetts Turnpike to the south, Arlington Street to the east (toward Park Square, the Public Garden, and Beacon Hill), and Charlesgate East to the west. It's one of the most central neighborhoods in Boston, Massachusetts, which is part of why it shows up on so many visitor itineraries: you can walk into it from the Public Garden in a few minutes, or ride the MBTA Green Line and commuter rail into Back Bay Station, the neighborhood's main transit hub. Taxis and rideshares reach it easily as well, and its flat, grid-pattern streets make it simple to navigate on foot once you arrive. Boston Logan International Airport is about 5 miles away, roughly a 15-minute drive by taxi or rideshare.

History Of Back Bay

Back Bay wasn't always land. Through the second half of the 19th century, principally between 1857 and 1882, the city filled in what had been a tidal bay of the Charles River, turning marshland into one of the first large-scale planned neighborhoods in the United States. Architect Arthur Gilman laid out its wide boulevards and cross streets on a formal grid, a deliberate contrast to the narrow, older lanes of Beacon Hill and the North End. Wealthy Bostonians built elegant brownstone rowhouses along Commonwealth Avenue and Newbury Street during this boom, and much of that architecture survives intact today. The neighborhood's well-preserved 19th-century streetscape earned it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and it remains one of the best places in the city to see Victorian-era urban planning up close.

What Makes Back Bay Worth Visiting

Back Bay is walkable in a way few American city neighborhoods are. Its flat terrain, wide sidewalks, and compact grid mean most of its landmarks sit within a 15 to 20-minute walk of each other, and the neighborhood connects directly on foot to Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the start of the Freedom Trail. That combination of history, architecture, and easy walking is the main reason it draws first-time visitors and repeat travelers alike. Beyond the brownstones, the neighborhood carries an upscale, well-kept character: manicured tree-lined malls run down the center of Commonwealth Avenue, a design that echoes the Parisian boulevards Arthur Gilman drew on when he planned the neighborhood, and shopfronts along Newbury Street mix historic facades with contemporary retail.

Top Things To See In Back Bay

A short list to orient a first visit, covering Back Bay's best-known attractions:

Trinity Church — an 1877 Richardsonian Romanesque landmark on Copley Square, considered one of the most architecturally significant churches in the country and a National Historic Landmark.
Boston Public Library — the first large free municipal library in the United States, with a courtyard and reading rooms open to visitors.
Copley Square — the civic heart of Back Bay, framed by Trinity Church and the library. The square was known as Art Square until the city bought and renamed it in 1883, honoring painter John Singleton Copley.
Newbury Street — eight blocks of shopping and dining inside converted 19th-century brownstones.
Gibson House Museum — built in 1859–60, one of the first houses raised in Back Bay and a National Historic Landmark, preserved as a Victorian-era house museum.

Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, sits just west of the neighborhood in the Fenway-Kenmore area, as does the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a short walk further in the same direction. To the north, the Charles River Esplanade offers a riverside path for walking or cycling with skyline views back toward Back Bay and Cambridge.
