Civil War Monument

Boston's Civil War Monument is not just a structure of stone; it's a bridge to the past, a compass to our present, and a tribute to those who laid down their lives during a time that defined the American spirit. For tourists looking to connect with history on a deeper level, a visit to this solemn site is an absolute must when exploring Boston.

Location

The Civil War Monument proudly stands in Boston Common, Massachusetts's oldest public park. Designed by Martin Milmore, this masterpiece of art and architecture can be found on the east side of the park, near the intersection of Tremont Street and Park Street.

History

Commissioned in 1874 and completed in 1877, the monument was built to honor the soldiers and sailors from Boston who perished in the Civil War. It also commemorates the end of slavery and the reunification of the United States. Designed by renowned architect Martin Milmore, the Civil War Monument has become an iconic landmark and a focal point of the city's heritage.

What to See

The monument is a three-part structure constructed of various types of granite, including a central column with intricate reliefs representing the Union cause and, standing atop it, the statue of the "American Defender." This figure depicts a soldier in civilian clothing with arms outstretched in a watchful stance, embodying the commitment and vigilance of the American people. Surrounding the central column are four figures: Peace, History, the Civil War, and the Abolition of Slavery, each encapsulating the monument's theme. The monument is also adorned with detailed inscriptions of battles, the names of 20 Massachusetts soldiers, and other significant war-related text.

Nearby Attractions

After paying your respects at the Civil War Monument, you will find several nearby attractions that will further enrich your experience. Just in a short distance, you'll find the iconic Massachusetts State House with its historical and architectural treasures. Also close by is the Granary Burying Ground, one of the most famous colonial cemeteries in Boston, final resting place of many notable Revolutionary War-era patriots. For art enthusiasts, the Boston Athenaeum and the Museum of African American History are choices that offer a deeper look into cultural and historical realms.
