Cambridge City Hall
Cambridge City Hall is the seat of city government for Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 795 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square, the city's civic and commercial center. The building faces Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square and is easily reached by MBTA bus routes along Mass Ave or a short walk from the Central Square T stop on the Red Line. It sits within the City Hall Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982, and its front lawn is one of the more popular small green spaces in this part of Cambridge.
History
Cambridge City Hall was built between 1888 and 1889, largely funded by a donation from Cambridge-born philanthropist Frederick Hastings Rindge. It was designed by the architecture firm Longfellow, Alden & Harlow in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the same style behind several other Rindge-funded Cambridge landmarks. The building's granite walls, trimmed with brownstone, are topped by a 158-foot bell tower housing a working mechanical clock that has been hand-wound for over 130 years.
The tower and facade underwent a two-year restoration project completed in 2024, addressing the stone masonry, wood window frames, the clock tower, the flagpole, and the gilding on the historic text above the entrance. The project earned Cambridge City Hall the 2025 Mayor Thomas M. Menino Legacy Award from Preservation Massachusetts.

Visitors can view the building's Richardsonian Romanesque exterior from Massachusetts Avenue, built of Milford granite trimmed with Longmeadow brownstone, with an inscription Rindge chose himself set above the entrance. The bell tower's clock, made by the E. Howard Watch and Clock Company of Waltham, has had the same steward for more than 30 years, hand-winding it every week and re-gilding its four faces during the 2022 to 2024 restoration.
The Cambridge Historical Commission periodically organizes tours of the interior, including the council chambers where city business is conducted. Checking current tour availability before visiting is worthwhile, since access depends on the city's schedule rather than fixed public hours.

MIT's main campus is roughly three-quarters of a mile in the other direction, toward the Charles River and Boston. The Central Square Red Line station connects directly to both areas, with Harvard Square just one stop away.
